Buying guide

Questions worth asking before you buy

Bagged or bagless?

A sealed bag traps fine dust and leaves the machine without a cloud. Bagless saves you buying bags, but you empty the bin by hand and wash the filters. If anyone in the house has allergies, bagged with sealed filtration is the safer choice.

Upright or canister?

Uprights push easily across wall-to-wall carpet and store in a narrow closet. Canisters are lighter in the hand, quieter, and far better on stairs, hard floors, upholstery and car interiors.

Is a central vacuum worth it?

The power unit lives in the garage or utility room, so the noise and the exhaust leave the room you are cleaning. You carry only a hose and a wand, and the dirt ends up somewhere you empty a few times a year.

How often do bags and filters need changing?

Change a bag when suction drops or it is around two thirds full. Exhaust and motor filters are typically once or twice a year in household use. Running a full bag makes the motor work harder and shortens its life.

What does HEPA filtration actually mean?

A true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. It only does that if the whole airflow path is sealed, otherwise fine dust escapes around the filter rather than through it. Sealed system and HEPA filter are two different claims, and you want both.
